Our Little Free Library was created by our FIRST Lego Team 17900 at Northern Middle School in Garrett County, MD! We are a team of 8 students, ages 9-13, best known as the "CRE8TORS". Our goal is to find clever ways to repourpose materials in order to deal with our world's trash issues. Our Little Free Library is 100% up-cycled materials that include wood, out-dated electronics. LEGO's and gently used books!
Mrs. Schilpp, our school media specialist needed a way to share used books with students. Even though students can always check-out a book in our school library, research shows that students who own books, or have access to a home library, have a greater appreciation and exposure to reading. Many people like to donate books that can’t be used in the school library so instead of them sitting in a box or lonely upon a shelf, we have a Little Free Library that openly share books with our school community. Sharing books is the perfect way to up-cycle, re-purpose! It will also be great to see kids sharing their books with others. Anyone can take, return or donate a book. This is how a love of reading will be passed on and celebrated!
Our FLL mission is to bring awareness to the the most current and fastest growing trash issue, ELECTRONIC WASTE. Our team participated in activities that used old electronics so we could learn about REVERSE ENGINEERING. We also used the materials as part of our design. Notice our use of old keyboard keys, hard drives, circuit boards, mice and USB wires and cords.
